The moving-cost data nobody publishes, so we published ours
Moving companies have a data problem, and customers pay for it. Ask five movers what a long-distance move costs, and you will get five different numbers, five different definitions of what is included, and very little you can compare. The industry publishes prices reluctantly, in ranges so wide they are useless, or not at all. We run a moving cost calculator, not a moving company, so we see this from the customer's side. People arrive at our site with one question, what will my move actually cost, and the internet gives them everything except a straight answer. So we decided to publish the data we had, in the open, and let people judge it for themselves. Publishing that data changed how people used the site. Instead of bouncing off a generic guide, visitors landed on their route, checked the estimate, and adjusted it for their home size. The questions we received got sharper too: fewer…
